Course Decision on blogs vs. exercises

After some pretty impressive negotiations (smile), the operating systems classes have convinced me that blogging is so valuable it can replace the assigned exercises from the textbook. I agree that communication is valuable, and I have some reservations about the quality of the exercises in the textbook, so I offer you this -- you may blog in lieu of completing a chapter's exercises, or you may complete all the exercises in a chapter. Either activity will count. If you do both, you are just a superachiever, (applause), but no extra credit.

In case you have some reservations about the use of the internet for research, I suggest that you look at this site. How helpful do you think a forum such as this is? What in particular do you glean from this site? Add your comments, and then, blog on!

I think this is a good idea. It gives everyone a chance to share and see different insights to a common idea. I will miss the sleep aide that the exercises provided, but I am sure I will be okay.

I disagree. The homework assignments provide a good way of getting people to think and understand the material. Besides, they are not that hard.

As for different ideas and different insights, you can achieve that by having people post answers to selected exercises.

You are right about the assignments
not being that hard, but I guess that some don't want to put the same effort as others.

What? You have a wife and kids and other courses and a job? Are you saying those are valid reasons to make the course easier?

Well excuse me. No one forced you to take these courses in the first place. Also, no one forced you to marry and have kids.

I recommend you employ a multiple level queue aging and assign priorities to each of the processes in your life. Give your classes the highest priority and only spend time on the other processes only if you have to.

mike you are entitled to your own comments but other people have lives. that is why we blog so we can state our own opinions.

I think the forum is a good idea also, I think there are some people that are missing the point. It's not about not doing the assignments, the exercises in the book are basically a review of the chapter (which you should be reading anyway). Anyway if anyone does not understand the chapters as they read them there are plenty of websites that the teacher (Mrs. P) has provided for us.

I think that maybe the forum could be more based on this class (operating systems).

i do think the homework hepls in some cases understand, but I would definitely rather blog than do it. I will probably still do some of them to help me understand the parts of the chapters that I dont.

I am not nor will ever be interested in computers enough to make it a profession so in my case I believe that doing the homework will not benefit me in any way :) Thanks for allowing us the ability to express ourselves Mrs. P. Personally, I find it hard to understand the concepts described on the site you had as a link. I am new to this and the way it was written was more confusing than howstuffworks.com.

I would have to agree to the blogs. Yes, we all read the chapters and the next day we do a quick summary of it. No doubt that the exercises helps, but thats what we can discuss further in depth on the next class date if there's any questions. But I think everyone will choose which is best for them.

Blogger Coon, why the personal attack on blogger Don? Many people have families and school is not our highest priority in life. I still need a job to pay bills and I go to school in the evenings. I miss seeing my babies and studying is difficult for me at times. I know I have to do this to give my baby a better life and being a single mother with no college education makes life impossible. If going to college is the highest priority you have in life then you really have some issues, or not much of a life.

I think some of the exercises in the book are over my head. I also like to read the ideas and opinions of other classmates.
