Welcome to ITSC1405

All technology changes more rapidly than published textbooks can address. As the new semester begins, the class will use this blog as a repository for student research and reflection.

To start off, let's create a baseline which is a common computer practice. What is the first operating system that you used and which operating system(s) do you use today? How do they differ?

This is first of many reflective posts that will be required in the course, so start strong! Add your comments to this thread.

Blog on!

I began using DOS. Now I use both Windows (versions Windows7, Windows Vista, and XP), but I truly prefer Linux, especially Ubuntu.

I began using Windows 98. The system was very slow, and constantly booted me out of the system. Then I finally had a system crash and was extemely done with using Windows 98. I now use Windows 7. I am very happy with being able to switch from different programs without having system issues.

The first operating system I used was Windows 98, but was too young to even remember any significance of it. I then used XP, which I did like, and Vista, which was ok except for the fact it took up half my RAM. I now use Windows 7 and love it.

The first operating system that I used was Windows 95. I don’t remember having many problems which I contribute to my not knowing much about computers. I have learned a great deal since then. I currently use Windows 7 and love it, I stuck with XP after previewing Vista. I have a little experience with Linux and Ubuntu because of my job as a Technician.

The first Windows operating system I used was Windows 98. I began using 98 back in middle school, so I can't remember whether or not I actually liked it. As I got older, Windows XP was the OS I used most. Recently I began using Windows 7 on my laptop and it's the OS I prefer to use most.

Back in the day, around 1985 I used an old IBM system at trade school. There was a 5 ¼ floppy disk used to save resumes and such. The disk was so large you could probably patent it at Whamo as a Frisbee. I’m not entirely sure what OS the IBM system ran on, but I’m sure it had one. Later on in the 1990’s when the end-user experience started to flourish, I began getting involved with Windows 9x. First there was Windows 95, then 98, and finally 98se which wasn’t much different than the others. None of the 9x flavors had any password security authentication, you just had to press cancel and presto you’re on the desktop. Not to mention all the BSODs, due to the fact that the kernel was exposed (I never knew that was reason for all the BSODs, thanks “Dr P.”). I used Windows ME. It was garbage and a waste of time. I think ME was a weird clone of Windows 95 or 98. Then came the networking operating systems, the good stuff, Windows 2000 Pro, which was built on NT. It ran Active Directory, nice and robust. Since using 2000 Pro, I keep a domain controller running. I run Windows Server 2008 for a Web hosting and FTP. I have 3 client PCs. Two XP Pro, one Windows 7 machine. Windows 7 PC runs 4 Gigs of RAM anything less and it lags. XP Pro can run on 2 Gigs of RAM seamlessly. I prefer the networking operating systems and look forward to running Linux and/or MAC.

The first compuetr I can remember ran Windows 95, that was around 1997. I now use Windows Vista and Windows 7. Both systems are much faster, have more storage and can can run more programs at one time.

The first operating I used was MS DOS. I believe that I used it on a Macintosh computer. The OS I use more frequently is Windows Vista. However, I am familiar with just about all the Windows OS. I think that the most obvious difference between MS DOS and Windows Vista is the graphical user interface.

The first system I used was MS-DOS to play word muncher in school. Today I use Windows 7. They are different because Windows 7 uses a GUI that is way better than the 90's.

The first operating system that I used was Windows 95. It was the first computer that my dad bought. Since then I have used Windows 98, Windows XP, and currently Windows 7. Some other OS's that I've messed around with are Apple OSX and Ubuntu.

When I first start workin with computers I used Windows. I took classes on it in high school and learned to use it very well. I got my first job as an office assistant using Windows. Today, I use Windows 7 and I love it. Its not drasticly different from the Windows but its the small touches that make all sofware unique. Honestly, high school was a long time ago I can not truly remember all the differences off the top of my head.

Let me see if I can remember that far back? Well the first computer system I remember is an Atari, does that count? Well as a kid i remember using a commador 64, with the old cassett drive. Then later down the round got a 386 monster with a massive 20MB harddrive with Windows 95, the I have used every Windows OSes sense then. I never have used any Unix bases OSes, but i here good things about it and cant wait to learn that system also.

When I a kid I remember using Windows 98. It always ran slow so my dad would take it apart and put it back together to see if that would make it run faster but it would still be slow. Now that my uncle works for the Apple company, I use the Mac. It's ok, but I can't do my homework on it for my other computer classes.

I would say I reverted from being Omish but then I'd be lying. It's just that i don't recall what previous operating systems I used. The system I currently use is Windows 7 and it seems like a standard. I don't see how people could use Mac. It seems so primitive in my opinion.
Hi, I'm a PC.

The first operating system I recall using at home was Windows 95. AT school, we used a version of the Macintosh OS, but I don't recall ever being aware of exactly which version it was. Today, I use Windows XP, Vista, and 7 on a regular basis as well as Ubuntu 10.10. They differ dramatically both in speed and performance. It is honestly difficult to compare them directly as the way I use them and the tasks they perform are so vastly different today than they were back then.
