Welcome to ITSC1405 for Fall 2011

Hello everyone,

This is your collaborative site for Internet research for this course. I will post a topic every Monday for each of you to research. Be sure to take advantage of this blog -- the technology changes too fast to only rely on textbooks. For your first assignment, research the operating systems used on SmartPhones. Choose only one, then summarize your findings, post a relevant URL, and remember to add your name.

Welcome to the course and ....

Blog on!

Linux is unique among the other operating systems in that its development is driven by a community of developers rather than by a central company. According to ARCchart, the Linux OS supports more processors than any other operating system on the market, though the most popular phone models still use the Symbian OS.

BlackBerry (BB) smart phone devices use a propriety operating system (OS) developed by Research in Motion. The most recent version of the BB OS is v7.0 which was released early August 2011. Although v7 is the newest released it is not able to be used on just any BB smartphone. Each BB device must be capable of running the new OS wich includes new muliti-tasking technology, better data or faster data processing along with a faster web experience. BB with its propriety OS is most popular within the corporate environment. Its ability to wirelessly connect into the business environment has made it a popular choice for many professionals.

Their are many different operation systems used by smart phones but one example of one would be SavaJa (a Java based program)

SavaJe (pronounced savage) was the developer of the SavaJe OS, a Java OS for advanced mobile phones. The SavaJe OS was a monolithic OS-and-Java platform, an implementation of Sun Microsystems' Java Standard Edition, as opposed to the more limited Micro Edition usually offered on mobile phones. The SavaJe Java platform included a full implementation of Java Swing, enabling developers to create applications with richer user interfaces.

One of the more popular smartphones has always been the IPhone. The current version of the IPhones operating system (OS) is the iOS 4. The most current version being used is iOS 4.3.5, which released in August 2011. This is the same OS being used in the IPad touch and IPad. When the iOS was introduced it was a very innovative product. Allowing the use of more applications and easier storage, it allowed the users to create folders which intern allowed for easier more organized phone use. The new OS made multitasking much easier and faster adding 7 new multitasking services. These services including background audio and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which allows you to stream music or video in the background while talking on the phone. These features were created to complete with other popular brands like Android. Although, the iOS 4 has only been around for a short period of time it is scheduled to be replaced by the iOS 5 in the 3 quarter of 2011.

There are many different smartphone operating systems in use today. The Sybian Operating System, which is the operating system used by Nokia, is in the lead with control of 42% of the market. Sybian is also responsible for the first operating system on the market to work with full HD capability.
Following Sybian in 2nd place for control of the market is the Android, brought to use by Google, and is the fastest growing operating system.
The iOs which is the operating system used on the iphone by Apple, and the version I personally use, has been passed up due to the exclusivity of the product. Currently it is only offered on the iphone and only by a few wireless providers.

Windows Mobile is a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft that is used in smartphones and mobile devices.

It is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel, and first appeared as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system. It is supplied with a suite of basic applications, and is designed to have features and appearance somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows.

Developed in 2000, the Windows Mobile OS has gone through many different versions leading up to the release of Windows Phone 7, which is the latest revamp of this OS.

The Android OS is a Linux kernel based open source mobile operating system that can work with smartphones built by different manufacturers. The open source has allowed Android powered smartphones to gain in popularity anong consumers because of the enormous amount of applications that developers have created. Apple on the other hand controls what applications can be used with their hardware. The Android OS although relatively new has the potential to outpace all other mobile OS due to it's open source.

Apple iOS4 operating system, after looking at the page and brief description of not only its sophisticated look an easy use. The fact you control everything with a scroll or tap of the finger.
You have numerous features that are breathtaking, from facetime calling to retina display to placing a call or play a song with just your voice, an the app that blew me away, the keynote app, where you can create an elegant presentation on your phone.
Also it maintains the largest apps store on the planet, an you dont have to worry about hardware or softwar issues. Apples makes both. Overall this phone is built an created to destroy anything on the market today.

OSX is the operatiing system for the iPhone, it is a converted operating system of the Mac OS. The phone is a touch screen interface with its own app store with an almost unlimited amount of applications to chose from. Wifi/bluetooth capabilities, along with GMD to name a few.

Android INC. was found in 2005 by Andy Rubin. The Andriod operating system Kernel is derived from the Linux Kernel. Since the System is open source, this makes it easier for users to makes changes without worrying about violations that could land them in a place without bars in the windows and a cellmate named Butch. The best part is, the updates are named after desserts.

Yes, we have all been talking about it. The Android system is largely becoming the common OS for phones. Because of its Linux roots(being opensource), it allows corporate developers and backroom hackers to expand on an already thriving platform. From the early days of Cupcake, the Android OS has by and large changed into, currently Honeycomb. The upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich platform will combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb. Enhancing the user ability of NFC, file and media exchange, SD communication and controls over the UI. CAN'T WAIT!!!

The operating system I choose to research is the iOS 4 on the iPhone by Apple. It is by far the most popular handheld device/phone on the market hence having the user interface localized into 30 different languages. The iOS 4 is based on the operating system from Mac OS X, allowing you to use multiple programs or apps at once without slowing down performance. The iphone has over 425,000 apps that you control with your fingertips allowing you to do everything from editing movies to posting on facebook to using it as gps. The current OS is 4.3 while the next OS will be iOS 5 coming in fall of 2011. Even with an older iphone, all updates to the latest OS will be free to upgrade. With Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple retiring I am anxious to see what the next devices that will follow into the upcoming years by Apple.

I am into Apple's mobile operating system, iOS(known as iPhone OS. the user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. iOS is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system by nature.
My wife got me hooked up, with the Apple 3GS, my kids and me, enjoy all the Apps you can get.

I use the iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad.), I haven't tried out Android yet. The iOS is pretty nice and simple, you can play games, listen to music, and do your job. Also, you can directly buy music from iTunes to your iOS device and directly download apps from the App Store.

iPhone's os is just a smaller version of Mac OS X designed to use apps instead of menus to easily navigate the phone. This smart phone os also has the ability to cut and paste info.

iOS 5:
This operating system’s family tree includes MacOS and BSD which basically sum them up to be the progeny of Mother Unix as these operating systems are also referred to as being, “Unix-Like.” To be Unix-Like simply means that the operating system is merely mimicking function that can only be concluded as “similar” due to the recent standards established within the Single UNIX Specification policies.

The kernel type this system uses is “hybrid,” which is formatted to use the procedure of “divide and conquer” when it comes to bearing the burden of Application IPC, Device Driver, UNIX Server and File Server functions by means of keeping the code line count to a minimum in order to keep modulation as efficient as possible while maintaining the speed of a monolithic kernel to run other particular tasks crucial to overall performance.

Though the kernel itself operates solely on the language of C++ programming, the operating system in its entirety implements the use of two other code languages, C and Objective-C, based on the concept of a multiple program paradigms for multiple solutions technique- a humble acknowledgement there is not one program to rule them all.

The operating system I wanted to research was the OS on my smartphone, the HTC Aria. The OS that the Aria runs on is the "Android 2.1". Although the Android company has currently a 3.2 version, the Aria has only been updated to the 2.1 version as of July 2011.
