DOS Trivia

DOS lingers in even the latest Windows versions. Exiting from DOS required a reboot. One of the most common keyboard combinations is the CLT+ALT+Delete trio. Who came up with this? What other DOS legacies can you identify in Windows?

Blog on and remember this is part of your course grade!

As Don stated David Bradley created Ctrl+Alt+Del. He recently retired from IBM. He didn’t get anything for it creating it, because of proprietary ownership of IBM If you go to www.devilducky.com/media/28888/ You will hear him describe why he created it. I thought it was interesting he wanted to make it an Easter egg. Bradley did not intend Control-Alt-Delete to be used by end users it was meant to be used by people writing programs or documentation, so that they could reboot their computers without powering them down. This was useful since after a computer was powered down, it was necessary to wait a few seconds before powering it up again if one wanted to avoid damaging the hardware. Since software developers and technical writers would need to restart a computer many times, this key combination was a big time-saver. He used this key combination because it is practically impossible to accidentally press this combination of keys on a standard keyboard. In 1980 Bradley was one of twelve engineers developing the first IBM Personal Computer. Bradley developed the ROM BIOS. So he would have been remembered with out Control-Alt-Delete but it is still cool.

Pinging is left over from DOS as will as CMD.EXE and COMMAND.COM in NT and also FAT32.

While DOS is no longer supported we would not be where we are if not for DOS.

Is it Tim Buckley or David Bradley who created Control Alt Delete? I found those two.

The recently retired IBM employee David Bradley designed Control+ Alt+ Delete. He was one of the original 12 employees that developed the first IBM personal computer as well.
