Thought Projects

Taking a cue from Einstein's "Thought Experiments", this site presents "Thought Projects" which are present examples of system design from the present and the future. The Operating system topic of the day is system management -- often the analogy of a highway system is used to explain computer networks. You can take that analogy further to explain the functions of systems management. Take a look at this site and then blog on your impressions, analysis, and evaluation of such a concept in driving.

As always, blog on!

We currently have auto pilot on airplanes and some computerized speed control devices installed on many vehicles, but this creation is most likely inevitable to malfunction and could cause serious accidents. Ofcourse auto pilot in the sky works because we do not have traffic in the air and we have air traffic controllers (humans)helping with the course in which an airplane travels which is some sort of map (in a way) like the map they are proposing for Auto drive vehicles. We encounter many interruptions and problems while using our computers and I would not trust my life or my child in the hands of a vehicle created to run on auto drive. There are too many concerns I have with regard to autoDrive concepts. The cost would be extremely high to change our current interstates, highways, and farm market roads as well.

I think the Auto Drive system could work. I like the way the company has spelled exactly how the requirements will be tested. As some one who works with requirements in testing software I have found that this is often an overlooked step in building software.
Another thing they have going in their favor is that most of the technology is already being used on some level. I have a runners GPS that cost only a little over one hundred dollars. It works great. I think with more powerful computers and stronger GPS’s that in theory can work.
Now I also believe it has to over come some things too. Number one is human nature, coupled with the fact that most people are not going to be able to afford gasoline for a car that will travel at speeds of 130 miles per hour. Now if technology creates a cheaper fuel source then everything else might fall into place. Still human nature might want to give up control as easy as some would think. That being said who would have thought 10 years ago that everyone would have a cell phone and you can store more information on a thumb drive than the earliest hard drives.

To add on a bit to lunatic's comment...

What about zombie computers? I mean, someone hacking your computer to send spam is one thing. Imagine them hacking your car...

No system that has communication with the outside world can ever be truly secure.

it might just reduce auto theft for a while but eventually thieves will find their way in by hacking into the system too. Also we have to consider the repair cost for the auto pilot incase of breakdown, the technical support for the system would be somehow expensive.

this might be a big problem!! what if the signal fails or has a maulfuction... we are all screwed!!!! Byron Shaw

I have already stated human nature is going to be the biggest obstacle. It's funny we get in a train or a plane and they are using auto-pilot already and we think nothing of it. I think someone already pointed this out too. Each day we hear about break-thoughts in technology. I love to drive but I can see a time when some variation might become the standard.

What weird is that people can trust themselves to drink and drive but when it comes to a computer there trust is lacking.
I figure as long as they have a quick shut off key like when i hit my brakes it turns off my cruise control i would have no problem with it but honestly i would have to use the auto polit many times before i would sleep while on auto polit. there are sensor the tell you when your about to hit something when you back up how hard is it to program a car to stop before you hit it. Long trips on the interstate OK in suburbs and rural ares dont be lazy.

about the auto drive system,
id rather trust my brain than some computer. maybe its just because i fear not having control

Personally this concept sounds too similar to the house in the twilight zone that was controlled completely by a computer mainframe. I dont trust it. Man leaves too much to technology and this is where it has to stop. Often times computer networks hit 'unexpected road blocks' and they cannot pull back on their own. So what is someone to do if their car's GPS System does not detect another car and cannot stop in time. I believe that there should still be an override for manual driving to be used in case of emergency.

AutoDrive Systems
Where do I start. It sounds like it might be a good idea, especially the way people drive now a days. But, when you start thinking about taking long trips out of state, is the system going to go the route that you want it to take? What about if the kids want to steal the car (seeing that it will drive for them)? So, there seems like there are some good points and some bad.

I think society would be reluctant to accept auto drive just due to the sheer enormity of the chaange it would be.

Plus the ammount of control it would give the government and authorities over vehicles.
Not to mention hackers who would eventullay learn how to hack the computers un them

I dont like the idea of my car drivin by its self i feel to unconforable with that!! but how ever i do think onces its out and all the bugs are fixed there will be less deaths and car crashes which i believe will lower the death rate alot!!!
