The question "Which is the best operating system?" has no easy answer. It's a bit like asking what is the best career: there are many variables to consider and personal need and desire is a major factor. Personally, I prefer Windows but I highly suspect my vote would go to Linux if I had more experience with the platform. I demand flexibility from my computers. I need my system to accept the hardware and software I'm working with and I need the power to correct any issues that may be preventing that. Mac OS is awful for "do-it-yourselfers" such as myself and Android is still too new and is still limited to it's designed purpose as a mobile platform. Not having the time to explore Linux and gain the practical experience necessary to bend it to my needs (though hopefully that will change by the time I finish my associate's), Windows is the only practical choice for me.

My first Operating system was windows.

My first operating system was Apple DOS for the Apple II, mostly due to repeated exposure to Oregon Trail throughout elementary school. A lot of horses broke their legs and died of dysentery that year.
As for the title of Best Operating System, my feelings tend to gravitate towards Windows 7 due to the wide device support and ease of use. This may change, however, depending on whether hardware manufacturers can learn to write drivers for Linux.

The operating system that benefits me the most is Windows. I have the most experience with it, and know a large majority of the tricks and shortcuts it has to offer. -Carl Sheriff ITSC 1405
