BSoD

The "Blue Screen of Death" didn't threaten the life of Microsoft, but it probably gave their programmers high blood pressure. Wikipedia (a useful site, but evaluate it carefully before accepting everything available there) explains BSoD very well. Do some research on your own, always keeping in mind that the technology consideration is always impacted by the business considerations. What impact did BSoD have on Microsoft?

The blue screen of death (BSoD) is one of the worse things that can happen to your system. It means an error has occurred. Such as audit crash on fail log is full. While researching I found it has also spawned a side business. You can buy a BSoD screen saver that is said to fool a developer. Also there are many downloads that are said to fix the BSoD. In reality sometimes all you need to do is Ctrl-Alt-Del.

The blue screen of death can strike anyone, anywhere. At the Comdex trade show, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates encountered the blue screen during a demonstration of Windows 98. There was a back-up computer near by.

Technically, Blue Screens appear to prevent the system from a more serious error and damage. They are displayed when the system detects an error or problem, from which it cannot recover. The system stops (that is why the official name of Blue Screens is "Stop Error" ), writes the contents of memory on disk (memory dumps), if this is enabled for the system and displays a text-mode error message with information about the condition that caused the error. Blue Screens can appear at any time -- during installation, at startup, or randomly without any apparent reason. Some of the most common reasons for BSoDs are:
drivers, hardware or harware overheating conflicts between programs, file inconsistencies or registry errors

The latest versions of Windows, like XP and 2003 are more stable and can recover after a couple of Blue Screens but sometimes even a single Blue Screen can make your Windows unbootable and you will have to reinstall your operating system

The blue screen of death (BSOD), is the informal name given by users to the Windows general protection fault (GPF) error. Named in honor of the error's dreaded display image of white text on a blue background, the BSOD is generated by the operating system when it has suddenly terminated with an error. The system locks up and must be rebooted. The blue screen may include some hexadecimal values from a core dump that can potentially be used to determine what caused the crash.

The Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) is the screen displayed by Microsoft's Windows operating system when it cannot or is in danger of being unable to recover from a system error. There are two Windows error screens that are both referred to as the blue screen of death, with one (Windows NT 4/2000/XP) being significantly more serious than the other (Windows 9x.).

The blue screen of death in one form or another has been present in all Windows operating systems since Windows version 3.1. It is related to the black screen of death in OS/2. In early builds of Windows Vista it was complemented with the red screen of death, used for boot loader errors.
