Microsoft from a Business Perspective
This blog makes a very interesting business point -- that Microsoft, like GM, has fundamental business problems. Read this just for the comparison of two major US giants, and then, as always, blog on!

While it is true that Microsoft seems to be declining as far as OS development goes, given the amount of capitol they have stacked up, I doubt seriously they'll be gone in the next year, or two years, or ten years. That's not the only reason either.
First, let's talk about OS development. The last time Microsoft really rolled over and did something new was probably round about 1995. Windows 3.1 to windows 95 was a HUGE leap in OS development. Since then, they seem to have kept most of their core things the same. The windows desktop looks little different now than it did 11 years ago. Sure, XP has a lot of eye candy, but when you turn it all off and just use the windows 2000 Desktop, what real difference are you seeing? (Other than the icons being different than those in 95 and Network Neighborhood being called My Network Places now)
Internet Explorer has not changed much for the last five years. It still includes many of the same bugs and anti-security that previous versions have had. (active X anyone?) Though internet explorer 7 promises to be more secure, more reliable, etc...I will have to reserve judgement until it's been in use for several months. My hopes are not high.
Ditto for Office. (this is about to change.)
This is becoming a "What's wrong with Windows" Post, and that's not what I intended.
My point is, Microsoft as a company seems to have come to a relitive stop in developing new and improved software - and software is what they are famous for.
The oragomi project not withstanding, what major software developments have they done since windows 2000? If you get under the fisher price themes, XP looks a heck of a lot like 2000, and acts in much the same way.
They take a long time to patch things that are found, and the only reason IE 7 is coming along is because mozilla firefox came along and began to eat microsoft's lunch.
Like GM, Microsoft seems to have stalled considerably.
the comment I just made (while it is true that microsoft seems to declining...) was mine. I also forgot to mention that the fact that they have so much capitol seems to secure their spot. They were fined by the EU and it seems to be cheapter for them to ignore the fine than to pay it.

What is happening to Microsoft happens to every company at one time or another. It is called achieving equilibrium in business. It is basic economics 101. Nothing lasts forever except for Coke Cola and even they had to change then go back to the original formula again. But even for them it is a constant battle.
America will never again see the jobs on a major scale that your grandfather worked in, then your father, and then you work at. Unions which do not foster change are going the way of the dodo. Almost every new car plant is built in the south where you do not have to be in a union.
Is Microsoft going bankrupt, no and GM is not either. They might get leaner, but that is not a bad thing either. Competition will fuel better products. We all will win. One thing I also learned is if you bet against Bill Gates most of time you will lose. Oh yeah isn't Code 12 (Office 2007) coming out this year?
Apple even has a system now that runs Windows, and while Apple –heads may not like it business is business.

Abbreviated BSOD, an error that can appear on computers running in a Windows environment. This includes even the earliest versions of Windows, such as Windows 3.0 and 3.1, and still occurs in later versions such as Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. Jokingly called the blue screen of death because when the error occurs, the screen turns blue, and the computer almost always freezes and requires rebooting.
I liked the name:)

Hello there,
What is in April 15?

It may be that they are making it hard for themselves as they progress. With the Vista comming out its going to to do 1 of 2 things.
Their sales of vista are going to drop off the chart due to extremly high pc standards to run it ( vista is on a 4 DVD set each DVD can hold about 1.5GB!) OR..Everyone will bow out and buy a really nice computer that today would be considered a top notch. (think about it do you have the funds, does the average pc user have a nicer computer than you?)
I have to disagree with that last statement.
Windows Vista will do the same things all the other versions of windows have done. If you dont have a *insert ultra beefy computer here* you will probably still be able to run Vista, but you're going to miss out on a lot, or plain hate it.
Windows 98 for example "requires" 32 megs of memory to run, but I've walked it at 4 megs. I didn't enjoy it, but it worked.
I have no idea why it wont attach my name to my comments. That last one about walking vista was mine.

microsoft really need to stop this idea of just recycling their products by only modifying the user interface, their clients are now well informed and their purchasing decisions tend to be based more on tangible benefit (increased profits) rather than marketing hype.

Hello, I just want to know...do we really know what Microsoft is working on in the research and developement department. I am sure they are now designing software and writing code that we as users will not see for years. Microsoft has always seemed to fair well no matter what and I think they will be around for a long time!

Microsoft are having problems but they always recover half the population uses windows dont know why but they do is a reality GM on the other hand dont knowif they will last too many car makers out they from europeans , japanese, koreans. L.C.
i think it would take someting truly magnificent to knock microsoft off the top of the software totem pole.
And i believe that in time it will happen, but not in the near future.
Google seems to be a contender. If they get into programming or come up with a Google O/s
were all doomed!!

microsoft is declining.. i thinks because they are trying to get as much of the bugs fixed as they can before the release anything although they will never be able to fix every one of them. Iv often thought about windows explore... it dont see how it has changed at all!!
